Cash should be under US$ 10,000. If you are carrying US$ 9,996 you are not obligated to tell the customs official, but it would be a good idea to do so. That number range raises a lot many flags.

If you must carry more than US$ 10,000 in cash, make sure you have multiple family members, with each one not carrying more than US$ 10,000. If you do carry more than US$10,000 you have to declare it. Source of funding proof/receipts would be a good idea.

In most instances a debit card will suffice well in the US for cash redemption. Sure it might be a bit expensive, but that's okay, considering the convenience and security it provides.

Travelers cheques - still very much issued, but hard to cash except certain bank branches.

Come to the US, open a bank account, and then have the money wired into your account.
