How likely is it that a newer, smarter version of ACH will be created to update or replace the current 1960s-era ACH system?

The incentive to make a new faster ACH (ACH) just doesn't lie there. $36 Trillion processed through ACH in 2012 (I may be off by a year here). Do the math on the overnight borrowing. So much revenue gets evaporated if it takes shape.

A centralized switch to have instant payments will eventually come forth, but the larger banks (collectively) would drive that. Not only drive it, but aggressively push it.

Such a system is still a few years away (at best).
