Does a Canadian MSB registration allow me to market to and onboard customers in other countries?

A Canadian MSB can be a useful part of your operating structure, but you still have to assess the rules in the markets you intend to serve.

I would start with what your company actually does in each transaction. Who contracts with the customer? Who receives and controls the funds? Who performs the checks? Who executes the payment and owes the beneficiary the payout? Those details matter more than the label you put on the company.

There is a meaningful difference between supplying software to a locally authorized payment provider and acting as the payment provider yourself. A partner-led structure may help you enter a market without immediately building your own regulated operation there, provided the contracts, customer disclosures, and actual responsibilities support that structure.

However, you need a jurisdiction-specific assessment. Do not assume that a customer finding your website independently removes every local licensing requirement. Territorial rules vary; for example, the FCA's guidance examines whether payment services are carried on as a business in or from the UK. FCA territorial guidance

Canada's own requirements also remain relevant. Serving only overseas customers does not automatically remove a Canadian operation from RPAA scope. Bank of Canada geographic criteria

For an early-stage business, I would generally validate customer demand through properly structured regulated partnerships first. Then consider your own entities and permissions where the actual business justifies them. That approach requires clear responsibilities and local advice; Canadian registration alone cannot answer the overseas licensing question.
